Southwest Family Life Centers, Inc. Receives $4,000

In partnership with CoBank, Medina Electric Cooperative presented the Southwest Family Life Center with a $4,000 donation on Wednesday, October 17. SWFLC provides information and, if necessary, a shelter for those who are in domestic/family violent situations in Frio, Medina and Uvalde counties.

“SWFLC’s mission is to provide comprehensive services to victims of domestic/family violence, including shelter and general services to the community,” said Elda Garcia, SWFLC Executive Director.

Concern for community and cooperation among cooperatives are longstanding cooperative principles. Cooperatives like Medina EC work to improve the quality of life in the communities we serve, and supporting the SWFLC is just one way of doing that.

The donation was made possible through the members of Medina Electric Cooperative, and through CoBank’s Sharing Success charitable contribution program. CoBank, a national cooperative bank, is one of Medina EC’s financial partners.

Through the Sharing Success program, CoBank matches an annual donation of up to $5,000 that Medina EC makes to up to three nonprofit organizations. Each year, Medina EC selects organizations located in a different parts of their 17-county service area to receive the donation.

Other recipients of this year’s Sharing Success donations from CoBank and Medina EC were the Sabinal Public Library (Sabinal), which was awarded $3,000 to help expenses associated with repairing the roof, and Casa de Esperanza (Rio Grande City), which was awarded $3,000 to purchase necessary items for people in their homeless shelter.

The $4,000 donation from CoBank and Medina Electric Cooperative was presented to the SWFLC.  Present for the donation was (left to right) Jesus Cuevas, SWFLC Board President; Elda Garcia, SWFLC Executive Director; Corina Martinez, SWFLC Victim Advocate; Diamantina Elizondo-Siller, SWFLC Board Member; Anna Rose Rios-Alvarado, SWFLC Board Secretary; and Sylvia Rangel, Medina EC MSR.
